mobile crane (plural mobile cranes)

  1. A crane of varying size and load capacity, usually mounted on road wheels, but sometimes on crawler tracks, which can move to wherever it is required.
    • 1962 December, “Talking of Trains: Walsall sundries concentration depot”, in Modern Railways, page 367:
      A 30cwt overhead electric travelling crane works in the received traffic part of the shed and two 2 ton mobile cranes operate in the forwarded section. Outside the shed in the yard there are a 10 ton electric gantry crane and a 7½ ton mobile crane to deal with wagon-loads.
