mitoplast (plural mitoplasts)

  1. A mitochondrion that has been stripped of its outer membrane, leaving the inner membrane intact.
    • 1920, P.-A. Dangeart, Compt. Rend. Acad. Sci., volume 170, abstract, page 301:
Successive divisions of this band, which is called the "mitoplast," give rise to several chloroplasts.
    • 2009, Protein Degradation in Health and Disease, page 170:
With mitoplasts (matrix plus inner mitochondrial membrane) in the same conditions the rate is much lower. When mitoplasts are added to mitochondria that have been incubated for two or more hours at 37 °C, when the rate of proteolysis has decreased, there is a new burst of proteolytic activity.
    • 2015, Earl Usdin, Function and Regulation of Monoamine Enzymes:
At the lower pressures, the pellet represents a mitoplast fraction and the supernatant is an outer membrane fraction which includes the soluble component of the intermembraneous space.
