[edit]Alteration (due to Italian mezzana), of Middle French migenne, from Old Catalan mitjana, feminine form of mitjan, from Latin mediānus. Doublet of moyen, which was inherited from the Latin, and of médian, borrowed directly from Latin. See English mizzen.
