From Proto-Algonquian *miᐧčiwaᐧkan, from *miᐧčiwa (to eat (something)). Equivalent to míichuw (to eat) +‎ -áakan. Cognate with Unami michëwakàn (food), Mahican miitθuwąąkan (food), Abenaki mijwôgan (food), Penobscot míčəwαkan (food).
