[edit]From Proto-Algonquian *miᐧčiwaᐧkan, from *miᐧčiwa (“to eat (something)”). Equivalent to míichuw (“to eat”) + -áakan. Cognate with Unami michëwakàn (“food”), Mahican miitθuwąąkan (“food”), Abenaki mijwôgan (“food”), Penobscot míčəwαkan (“food”).
