[edit]Inherited from Latin mediam diem. Compare Aromanian njadzã-dzuã; cf. also Catalan migdia, Occitan mieidia, French midi, Italian mezzogiorno, Spanish mediodía and Portuguese meio-dia. Was the traditional word for "south", but was replaced by sud.
