[edit]Cognate with Penobscot mə̀kihkan (“fishhook”), Malecite-Passamaquoddy mkihkon (“fishhook”)/pkihkon. Possibly cognate with Massachusett uhquân (“hook”), Narragansett hoquaùn.
Possibly from Proto-Algonquian *mekeçkani.[1]
