Usage notes
[edit]The Metsänhoitoyhdistys (Mhy) are a Finnish peculiarity. As the forests were and still are considered a natural resource of significant national importance, a system of (Mhy)'s was established by law in 1950 with the aim of promoting rational management of this resource. As a rule, all forest owners must belong to a regional Mhy. They can be exempted only if they can provide an acceptable plan for management of their lot and have a history of taking good care of their forest. The English translation "forest management association" is used by the associations themselves. The system is explained in English on Mhy's national website: [1]
