Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Unknown, possibly from the same onomatopoeic root as in mekkala and melu. Has also been proposed to be a borrowing from Russian метель (metelʹ, “blizzard, snowstorm”), but the semantic gap makes this unlikely.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]meteli
- noise, racket
- (Finnic mythology) Synonym of jatuli (“a sort of giant”).
- (obsolete) a crime of intentionally endangering public safety or making a threat of violence against a public officer
