1. (biochemistry) The study of the range of metabolites present in a person's body at normal times, and when suffering from specific diseases; may be useful as a diagnostic tool.
   • 2002, Oliver Fiehn, “Metabolomics – the link between genotypes and phenotypes”, in Plant Molecular Biology, volume 48, page 155:

     In order to understand these effects, a comprehensive analysis in which all the metabolites of a biological system are identified and quantified is needed. Since such an approach reveals the metabolome of the biological system under study, this approach should be called metabolomics.
