Etymology

[edit]

meri (sea) +‎ lahna (bream)

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈmeriˌlɑhnɑ/, [ˈme̞riˌlɑ̝xnɑ̝]
  • Rhymes: -ɑhnɑ
  • Hyphenation(key): meri‧lahna

Noun

[edit]

merilahna

  1. Any fish of the genus Brama, the pomfrets, in the family Bramidae.

Usage notes

[edit]

The common names for fish are often confusing and merilahna (lit. "sea bream") is a good example of that. The English term sea bream is used primarily of fish in the family Sparidae, which are hammasahven (lit. "tooth-perch") in Finnish, but also of fish in family Bramidae, also known as pomfrets in English and pomfretti in Finnish.
