Etymology

From Proto-Fula-Serer *mbedd (road), whence also Serer mbed. Cognate with Wolof mbédd (road), Badyara mbɛdɛ (big road), Mandjak umbɛra. Possibly an ancient Soninke borrowing. Compare Soninke béddè (main street, road).[1]
