[edit]Syncopated from *madĭtus (with subsequent assimilation of /dt/ to /tt/), from madēre (“be drunk, be wet”), itself from Proto-Italic *madēō, from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂d- (“wet”). Cognate of Sanskrit मत्त (mattá, “drunk”).
