masmalo
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]masma- + -lo; possibly related to Northern Sami muošmi (“meat between the thigh and ribs of a reindeer”)[1] (< Proto-Samic *muošmē?, possibly < common proto-form *maśma, but uncertain). The Samic word has been proposed to be borrowed from Pre-Germanic *moms-mo- (compare Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐌼𐌼𐍉 (mammō, “flesh”)).
masmalo means "(animal) groin" and "bag, pouch, bundle" in dialects (with semantic development probably from the former to the latter). The plant sense is probably from Elias Lönnrot's Flora Fennica (1860), but the reason for its adoption is unclear.
