Etymology
[edit]From Arabic مَصْفَى (maṣfā, literally “place of purification”), a calque of Latin purgatorium, whence also the modern word. Arabic-speaking Catholics use مَطْهَر (maṭhar), an equivalent formation from a synonymous root.
