[edit]From Old Galician-Portuguese marmelo, from Latin melimēlum (“sweet apple”), from Ancient Greek μελίμηλον (melímēlon), from μέλι (méli, “honey”) + μῆλον (mêlon, “apple”). Compare Galician marmelo and Spanish membrillo.
