From Old Galician-Portuguese marmelo, from Latin melimēlum (sweet apple), from Ancient Greek μελίμηλον (melímēlon), from μέλι (méli, honey) +‎ μῆλον (mêlon, apple). Compare Galician marmelo and Spanish membrillo.
