From Middle English mawmetrie, from Anglo-Norman maumeterie, a reduced form of mahumetterie (idolatry, heathendom), from Mahumet (Muhammad), ultimately from Arabic مُحَمَّد (muḥammad) (see Muhammad for more). Equivalent to mammet +‎ -ry.
