From malatu (ill) +‎ -ìa (derives abstract nouns denoting a state or condition from adjectives or nouns), proceeding further is unclear. Cognate with English malady, French maladie, Italian malattia, Portuguese maladia and Catalan malaltia which, this latter, could be the borrowing source for this lemma.
