[edit]From Old Galician-Portuguese malado, attested in local High Medieval Latin charters as mallato; ultimately from Proto-Germanic *maþlą (“gathering”), perhaps through Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐌸𐌻 (maþl, “market”).[1]
