[edit]Calque of English eyeglasses, composed of maj (“eye”), from Proto-Oceanic *mata (“eye”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *mata (“eye, center, most important part”), from Proto-Austronesian *maCa (“eye, center, most important part”) + kilahs (“glass”), borrowed from English glass.
