Compound of mahkamah (court) +‎ agung (supreme), previously pengadilan agung (1942-1945), a calque from Japanese 最高法院(さいこうほういん) (saikōhōin, supreme court), term used in East Asia, except for Japanese home islands, 最高裁判所(さいこうさいばんしょ) (saikōsaibansho). Continuation of Dutch hooggerechtshof and Japanese 最高法院(さいこうほういん) (saikōhōin, supreme court).
