[edit]From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ma-qaləsəm (“sour”). By surface analysis, ma- + asim. Compare Aklanon maaslom, Asi maaslom, Bikol Central maalsom, Cebuano maaslom, Malay masam, Urak Lawoi' มาซับ (masap), and Waray-Waray maaslom.
