Etymology

From Proto-Polynesian *makalili (compare with Maori makariri, Tahitian maʻariri, Samoan maʻalili)[1] from Proto-Oceanic *makaridriŋ affixing *ridriŋ from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *diŋin (compare with Malay dingin).[2][3]
