[edit]- As for Tonal Class, Benson (1964) classifies this term into Class 4 with a trisyllabic stem, together with kĩhengere, kĩariũngũ, and so on.

Usage notes
[edit]- (slender mongoose): One of the translations Benson (1964) employs is black mongoose, but the species Herpestes flavescens(syn. Galerella flavescens)is found only in Angola and Namibia.[5]
- (weasel): Benson (1964) and Barlow (1975) employ the term weasel and in Kenya, where Kikuyu people live, the following native species belonging to the family Mustelidae are found: African clawless otter (Aonyx capensis), spot-necked otter (Hydrictis maculicollis, syn. Lutra maculicollis), zorilla (Ictonyx striatus), honey badger (Mellivora capensis), and African striped weasel (Poecilogale albinucha).[6] Kingdon (1977) shows Kikuyu names for all these species, except for A. capensis: Njimbiri for H. maculicollis, Njoire for I. striatus, Nthegere for M. capensis, and Wakaruri for P. albinucha.
