Etymology

[edit]

Probably ultimately from Ancient Greek μανδραγόρας (mandragóras). Compare the Albanian cognate matërgonë and Hungarian nadragulya. It may have arrived via a Vulgar Latin intermediate root *mandragona. Compare Spanish martagón. Alternatively, and less likely, from a substratum or Dacian source.
