măcăleandru

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Romanian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Unknown. Possibly related to Ukrainian маколяндра (makoljandra). Compare Polish makolągwa.

Another theory suggests that its origin is Greek χαμαί κάλανδρος (chamaí kálandros, kind of skylark), or more unlikely, directly from κάλανδρος (kálandros), and that the Ukrainian word was borrowed from Romanian.[1]
