Macanese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Almost certainly borrowed from Japanese (mochi). Unclear whether alteration of the first vowel may have been influenced by Okinawan (mūchī) and/or a dialectal form in Japanese, or it may have happened internally in Macanese; compare fucinho and Portuguese focinho (snout).

Noun

[edit]

múchi

  1. mochi (rice cake made from glutinous rice and filled with desiccated coconut, roasted beans and sesame)
    Synonyms: apa-muchi, apa-muchi-coco
