Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *mɔːlʔ (human being); cognate with Thanh Hóa Muong mɔːn⁴, Sơn La Muong mɔːə⁴, Tho mɔːn⁴ ("a subgroup of the Tho") and Vietnamese mọi (barbarian).

Partially displaced by Mường as an endonym.
