Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *mäkärä (probably from earlier *makara), probably borrowed from Proto-Baltic [Term?] (whence Lithuanian makatas (gnat)). Cognate with dialectal Estonian mägar, Karelian mäkärä, Ludian mägär and Proto-Samic *muokēr.
