mão-pelada

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Portuguese

[edit]
Mão-pelada

Etymology

[edit]

Literally, naked hand, as their paws have little to no fur if compared to the rest of the body.

Noun

[edit]

mão-pelada m (plural mãos-peladas)

  1. crab-eating raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus, a raccoon species of Central and Southern America)
    Synonym: jaguacampeba

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The gender of this Portuguese zoonym is always masculine: when the gender of the being itself must be specified, use “mão-pelada macho” for male, and “mão-pelada fêmea” for female. Here, fêmea is treated as an undeclinable noun and don't necessarily need to agree in gender with the referent, but would change to fêmeo if so.
