Inherited from Middle French loyaulte, from Old French loiauté (whence English loyalty), leialté, possibly corresponding to Medieval Latin lēgālitās, lēgālitātem, from Latin lēgālis. Compare Spanish lealtad, Portuguese lealdade, Italian lealtà.
