[edit]From Proto-Germanic *luþô (“coarse woolen cloth”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)lūt-, *lūd- (“weak, languid”). Cognate with Old Frisian lotha (“thick robe”), Old Saxon lotho (“thick wool robe”), Old High German lodo, ludo (“thick woolen cloth”).
