[edit]From Old Irish líag (“spoon, ladle”), from Proto-Celtic *leigā (“spoon”), from Proto-Indo-European *leyǵʰ- (“lick”). Cognate with Welsh llwy (“spoon”); and with Old English liccian (whence lick), Latin plānus (“I lick (up)”). Compare Irish liach.
