Etymology

From Middle Dutch lindeworm, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *linþawurmiz. Equivalent to a tautological compound of linde (snake) +‎ worm (snake). Cognate to English lindworm, German Lindwurm, Old Norse linnormr (constrictor snake), Norwegian lindorm (serpent), Danish lindorm.
