From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qali-matək, from Proto-Austronesian *qaNi-matək (jungle leech). Compare Ilocano alimatek, Bikol Central limatok, Hanunoo limatok, Aklanon alimatok, Cebuano alimatok, Chavacano alimatok, Maranao limatek, Tausug alimatuk, and Urak Lawoi' มราตะ (mrataq). See also linta.
