Lithuanian
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]Apparently a nominalization of an obsolete liū̃tas (“fierce”), found in phrases such as liū̃tas lẽvas (“fierce lion”), with the meaning of "lion" being transferred from lẽvas (for which see Proto-Slavic *lь̀vъ (“lion”)) to liū̃tas. The latter is itself cognate with Proto-Slavic *ľutъ (“harsh, cruel, fierce”); see there for more.[1]
