Etymology 1

Inherited from Latin ēlixus (“boiled, soaked”). Compare the regular thematic counterpart lessato, from lessare (“to boil”). Bentley analyses/analyzes the former as agentless and derived from a change-of-state root, and the latter as agentive and derived from a verbal base.
