Etymology

[edit]

From lekki +‎ -o- +‎ atletyka. The word lekki is used here as “light” and “heavy” athletics were once distinguished as two different sports disciplines. The light sports were all track and field disciplines, while the heavy ones consisted of weightlifting, wrestling, and, occasionally, boxing. Nowadays, this distinction is hardly ever made.
