[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. Possibly connected to legere (“to gather”)[1] because they can be scooped up in the hand. The second element appears to be the common noun-forming suffix -men, but the connecting -ū- is unexplained. Alternatively, a loanword from some other language, but no cognates have been identified.
