[edit]From Proto-Germanic *lahsaz, from Proto-Indo-European *lakso-. Cognate with Old High German lahs (German Lachs), Old Norse lax (Swedish lax). The Indo-European root is also the source of Lithuanian lašiša, Latvian lasis, Russian лосо́сь (losósʹ).
