Etymology

Dissimilation of earlier leamhlacht, from Middle Irish lemlacht, a compound of lem (soft, weak) and lacht (milk) (compare leamh and lacht). Was originally masculine (as is lacht), but later became feminine due to association with the suffix -acht.
