Dissimilation of earlier leamhlacht , from Middle Irish lemlacht , a compound of lem ( “ soft, weak ” ) and lacht ( “ milk ” ) (compare leamh and lacht ). Was originally masculine (as is lacht ), but later became feminine due to association with the suffix -acht .
