Inherited from Latin (aqua) lixīva, from the adjective lixīvus (made into lye), from lixa. Compare Spanish lejía, Italian liscivia, Friulian lissie, Sicilian liscìa, Portuguese lixívia, French lessive, Sardinian lessía; compare also Albanian alisivë.
