Dutch

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Probably borrowed from English lamaism or French lamaïsme. Equivalent to lama +‎ -isme.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˌlaː.maːˈɪs.mə/
  • Audio:(file)
  • Hyphenation: la‧ma‧is‧me
  • Rhymes: -ɪsmə

Noun

[edit]

lamaïsme n (uncountable)

  1. (somewhat derogatory) lamaism, the Tibetan and Mongolian form of Buddhism

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The term has found disfavour among contemporary scholars of Buddhism for its connotations of a ritualistic perversion of a pure Buddhism; Tibetaans boeddhisme is used instead. Continued use exists among non-specialists, especially in texts translated from English, but this has an orientalist ring to it.

French

[edit]

[edit]

From lama +‎ -isme.

Noun

[edit]

lamaïsme m (plural lamaïsmes)

  1. lamaism, the Tibetan and Mongolian form of Buddhism
