[edit]Etymology
[edit]From an older (still dialectally attested) form lakstīga (the final la resulting from Germanic influence; cf. German Nachtigall), from the verb lakstīt (“to produce bird-like sounds; to chirp, to tweet; to whistle”), from Proto-Baltic *lakst-, from Proto-Indo-European *lekʷ-, *lokʷ-, which renders voice sounds (and from which Latin loquor “to speak”). Cognates include Lithuanian lakštiñgala, lakštìngala.[1]
