Akin to lag (“to wet, moisten”), lëgatë (“marsh”)^[1] and possibly laç (“wetland”).^[2] Likely a formation from Proto-Indo-European *welg- (“wet, damp”), akin to Proto-Slavic *vòlga (“moisture”).^[3]^[2] Alternatively borrowed from South Slavic descendants of it,^[4] compare Serbo-Croatian vlȁga / вла̏га, Aromanian vlagã (“moisture”).
