[edit]From Ottoman Turkish لوفر, from Greek λουφάρι (loufári), a form of γουφάρι n (goufári), γοφάρι (gofári), from Byzantine Greek γο(υ)μφάριον (go(u)mphárion),[1] from Hellenistic Koine Greek γόμφος (gómphos) + ending -άριον (-árion). [2]
