Etymology

From Proto-Celtic *lekno, possibly ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)leym- (“marshy meadow”) (see *léymō (“lake”)). However, compare Welsh llwyn (“grove, woods, copse”), which is borrowed from Latin lignum.
