[edit]From Old English (pre-1500) kirtle - a man's short coat or tunic. Possibly related to Yiddish קיטל (kitl) via Old high German.

[edit]- The word is quoted in Craven Dialect (1828), and is still in use throughout parts of the North Pennines five hundred years after it went out of use (with this meaning) in standard English.
