[edit]From kverk (“throat”) + sott (“disease”). May also be analyzed as an apocoped version of kverka (“to kill, to strangle”) + sott (“disease”), which can be seen in the old Danicized spelling Qværkesot (normalized as kverkesott, also used in Bokmål).
