Etymology
[edit]Either of the following:
- From Proto-Philippine *kulintas (“necklace”) with elision of /l/. Compare Pangasinan kulintas / kolindas, Sambali kolintah, Abenlen Ayta kolinta, Asi kulintas, Agutaynen kolintat, Bikol Central kulintas, Aklanon kulentas, and Cebuano kulintas, and Hiligaynon kolintas. Possibly coincidental and conflated with Spanish cuentas.
- Early borrowing from Spanish cuentas (“beads”), plural of cuenta (“bead (small spherical object)”). However, expected word would be *kuntas if borrowed early but possibly an exception. Compare Ilocano kuentas, Bikol Central kuwentas, Cebuano kuwintas, and Waray-Waray kwentas.
