Etymology

From Proto-Tocharian *käurp-, from Proto-Indo-European *kerp-h₁-o-, from *kerp- (to pluck), a form of *(s)ker- (to cut). Cognate with English harvest, German Herbst (autumn), Latin carpo (to pluck), Lithuanian kirpti (to chop), etc.
